Hints of a historic deal coming together in the Klamath Basin

The Northwest just got the barest, quickest peek at the status of the negotiations over a sweeping agreement in the Klamath Basin to remove four dams, restore salmon runs and resolve the long-running water disputes in the basin. If the deal comes together at the end of this summer, as two governors and a top Obama administration official predicted Tuesday, it would lead to the world’s largest dam-removal project.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and PacifiCorp CEO Greg Abel released a joint statement Tuesday announcing that they had agreed to push off until September a June 30 deadline for a final agreement on water management and dam removal on the Klamath.
It’s not surprising that the parties need more time to come to a final agreement on one of the most complex and far-reaching environmental and economic deals in the region’s history. What’s important about the announcement is the optimism that all the parties, even Abel, seemed to share about the likelihood of a final agreement in three months.
