New rate plan slated for Lakeside Water District customers

Lakeside Water District customers will be able to choose how they want to pay for their water under a new rate plan adopted by the district board this week.
The new rate structure gives Lakeside customers two options: either a tiered rate that charges higher amounts for greater levels of water use, or a system that charges a penalty when a customer uses more than 90 percent of their water consumption in 2008. Customers can change the option they use twice a year.
The bottom line, district officials said, is that they need their customers to use 10 percent less water than they used last year. “We don’t care how you save the water. Just save it,” said Frank Hilliker, president of the Lakeside Water District board. The district serves about 35,000 people in Lakeside.
The district board approved the new rate structure and a rate increase at its meeting Tuesday. District general manager Bob Cook said the penalty rates under the new structure will take effect Sept. 1.
